I am a Ph.D. candidate in Communication Studies at the University of Iowa. The humanities need more historical understandings of science and technology, especially as new sciences become inextricably linked with technologies. My research interests include media technologies of communication, their history, and the social policies that encourage or discourage their development. We socialize with others through the technologies we invent, including spoken language, writing, sound recording, broadcasting, and more recently, mobile communication devices. My recent interests question new mobile communication devices: What is their history? What technologies shaped their development? And how have they effected social relationships among military, hospitals, and consumers?
