I was actually at the ASOME conference at CHNM that resulted from Jeff’s session at THATCamp and there were some interesting ideas there.

I’m actually working on a book chapter about this right now. I’ve been the PM for 2 DH projects and the UX team lead for another and I think there are some challenges working DH projects that are very unique to academia. We need to talk much more about this! Some of the sources I’m using in my chapter:

I have what I call a driver’s seat perspective to operating a database. My predecessor gave me a crash course that allows me to operate at a functional level, but I have no clue as to the mechanics or architecture of the database. Thus, when something goes wrong, I am sent scrambling through references to troubleshoot. I am wondering if anyone else is in the same poistion, and if so, would a reverse-engineering approach be more effective for a workshop session?

As Grants & Administration officer for Humanities Iowa, I am in charge of achiving all of the media projects we fund, from oral histories of veterans to power points to award-winning documentaries. I am looking for an efficient way to store and distribute this content as it is currently amassing a rather ugly pile on my desk instead of enlightening the world. It’s a travesty.

How do identity issues–such as race, sexuality, gender–influence our ability to collaborate –How can we collaborate across lines of difference?

Thanks for the links to your post and Jeremy Boggs — I love reading about other designers’ processes. I’d also be interested to hear about others’ hardware/software setups, similar to usesthis.com/ but for DH/UX.

I’ve spent a good deal of time working with social media for theatres, for instance, and am also interested in social media engagement at historic sites.

I could stumble my way through teaching the basics for using HTML in WordPress, but I’m sure there are folks coming who could better teach building a website from scratch. If others also feel like they want an introduction, we could set up a session where we learn together through Lynda.com tutorials.

I can also talk about Information Architecture needs from the user’s perspective. As in, what information do people want to get from your website? Coming from a communication and UX (user experience) design perspective. (Disclaimer: most of my knowledge in this realm is self-taught. I haven’t taken a strict IA or UX course at the grad level.)

I have some experience with micro-PM, as in, managing scopes of work in one area of larger projects, as well as managing continuous projects with concrete deadlines (*sigh* I miss that world). Questions I’d have for this session would be: what tools (Google docs, WorkFlowy etc.) do people use to manage personal and collaborative project goals? What roadblocks have people encountered when defining what the project needs are? What unexpected conflicts have risen that have set project goals back?

I must be doing something right in who I follow on Twitter! The idea of library-as-publisher is a near and dear one for me because I was the editor for a local alt-monthly for a time. My personal interests lie in the maker labs you mention as well as getting user-contributed stories for the preservation of local history (i.e., that crowdsourcing part). The 9/11 Digital Archive is a fascinating example of the latter. The other piece that fits in here is supporting technological literacy goals that may improve the life experiences of patrons. So many opportunities here!

How do you set priorities/deadlines? How do you assign resources? It seems like lacking a dedicated project manager, whoever comes in and demands time ends up getting the most resources, and I would love to brainstorm ways around this.
