Anyone interested in talking about archiving media

Is anyone interested in discussing/learning about options for archiving data?  I see that there was a discussion in 2009:  Jeffrey McClurken, Archiving Social Media Conversations of Significant Events.  Since data storage (I am mostly concerned with audio-visual, but this could be anything) is a moving target, this is something that I would like to talk about.   Laurie Graham (Anthropology)

About laura-graham

I am an anthropologist who has used audio visual technologies for documentation and dissemination of my research. In 2009 a film I made with 2 indigenous filmmakers was distributed by Documentary Educational Resources (OWNERS OF THE WATER: CONFLICT AND COLLABORATION OVER RIVERS). It has been to multiple film festivals and I have been a FF judge. I want to develop a better website. I also teach a digital media anthropologoyclass (have been doing this since 1998) but wish I had more technical support (am really sorry that the Info Arcade is no more) and have been active in promoting student familiarity with AV/digital medias. Would like to know more colleagues on campus that work in these media.

Yes. I’ve administered a few AV archival servers for public institutions and have attended a couple conferences on AV preservation. Definitely interested in having a conversation about this topic.

  2. I’m interested in the digital preservation of media as well. Your description of it being a “moving target” is an apt one.

I’m especially interested in archiving video/HDV. What format should AV materials be ‘stored’ in? FCP? How to deal with changing platforms and hardware as well? How does one keep up with this?

  4. I am definitely interested in this topic. As Grants & Administration officer for Humanities Iowa, I am in charge of achiving all of the media projects we fund, from oral histories of veterans to power points to award-winning documentaries. I am looking for an efficient way to store and distribute this content as it is currently amassing a rather ugly pile on my desk instead of enlightening the world. It’s a travesty.

  5. I’m very interested in this topic–I’m dealing with many of the same issues on my current project that I posted a proposed session for: iowacity2012.thatcamp.org/03/31/digital-dissertations/. I was actually at the ASOME conference at CHNM that resulted from Jeff’s session at THATCamp and there were some interesting ideas there.
